In this episode of the podcast, I’m discussing the recent trends in overlanding, a type of off-road travel. I’ll examine whether the popularity of overlanding is waning by analyzing online search data, which shows a decline in searches for the term “overlanding” in recent years.
However, there have been some positive anecdotal examples of overlanding continue to grow in popularity like increasing attendance at Overland Expo events, indicating a continued interest in overlanding among enthusiasts.
I also think that the decline in online searches might be due in part to a potential decrease in casual interest, as the initial surge in popularity during the COVID-19 pandemic may have subsided.
Ultimately, I remain optimistic about the future of overlanding, and have seen a growing presence of overlanding-related businesses, the continued growth of online communities dedicated to the hobby (like my group Newbie Overlanders), and the passionate storytelling of overlanding enthusiasts through platforms like YouTube.
